Arlington Landfill

Environmental

The Arlington Landfill is designed and operated as an environmental control facility, by incorporating systems that are designed, managed and monitored to ensure the quality of groundwater, surface water and air are protected.

The Arlington Landfill actively captures and utilizes the methane gas produced as a result of the waste decomposition process. A network of gas extraction wells and transfer pipes allow gas generated in the landfill to travel to an on-site processing plant where it is prepared for beneficial use. The gas is then piped off-site to a neighboring wastewater treatment facility, where it is used to reduce the use of fossil fuels to operate turbines that provide the energy to run the treatment facility.

13 ground water monitoring wells surround the active and inactive portions of the facility. These wells are sampled regularly by third party professionals, tested by independent state approved laboratories and reported to regulatory agencies on an on-going basis. Sampling is conducted to identify any change of water quality and verify that there have not been any impacts as a result of landfill operations. Monitoring will continue for 30 years after the facility stops accepting materials for disposal.

15 soil gas monitoring probes surround the site. These gas probes are sampled quarterly by third party professionals and reported to regulatory agencies on an on-going basis. Sampling is conducted to verify that there have not been any impacts as a result of landfill operations. Monitoring will continue for 30 years after the facility stops accepting materials for disposal.

The Arlington Landfill environmental protection system also includes Surface Water Monitoring and Controls, Storm Water Pollution Prevention, Spill Prevention, Control & Countermeasures, as well as an integrated system of waste Reduction, Reuse and Recycling.
