Recycling has forever changed the way waste is managed. Many states and municipalities have instituted mandatory recycling programs. These recycling efforts can require huge investments in manpower, equipment and facilities. Key's to successful recycling programs are education coupled with a keen sensitivity to the economic factors surrounding the entire recycling process. Duncan Disposal can evaluate your current and future recycling needs and create a program that complies with the ever-growing number of federal, state and local regulations. The North Texas Council of Governments projects that the population in North Texas will grow by more than 4 million people in the next twenty-five years.

The North Texas Council of Governments projects that the population in North Texas will grow by more than 4 million people in the next twenty-five years. This projected growth will have a significant impact on area landfill space, and will greatly affect local air quality. Emphasis on establishing recycling programs aimed at increasing the diversion of materials from area landfills will become increasingly more important. Duncan Disposal will continue to work with its current and potential municipal customers in identifying potential diversion strategies, and in developing economical solutions and programs to facilitate the successful implementation of these strategies.

Duncan Disposal currently provides residential curbside recycling programs in many of the cities we contract with for services. The most common collection method we use is referred to as a single-stream collection model. This method allows the homeowner to place all of their recycling materials into a single container without the necessity of separating the materials prior to collection. This method makes it much more convenient for the homeowner to recycle their materials, and as a result, recycling participation rates are much greater than a source separated type system. The containers are typically collected once per week by collection crews, and are placed into a single compartment style collection vehicle and transported to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) for processing.

Once the materials have been delivered to the MRF, the materials are separated through an elaborate system of conveyors and machines, and in particular stages of the process, people hand separate the materials. Once the materials have been separated, they are directed to different baling areas and baled for transportation to the commodities market. Over the course of the last few years, several single-stream processing facilities have been constructed in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, which has resulted in a higher success rate of curbside recycling programs and keeping expenses at a sustainable level.
